Our Online Autumn Exhibition continues until Thursday 1st December 2022 and contains many of the pictures that were on display at the exhibition in Royston Town Hall plus some new pictures to replace those that have already sold.

The next demonstration will be on Friday 11 November from 8.00pm to 10.00pm in Market Hill Rooms.  This month’s demonstrator is John Wiltshire, and his subject will be “Fallen Trees in Watercolour”.  John, who has close links with the region, devotes much of his work to portraying the natural world, which he paints in a variety of media.  You can see examples on his website.

The next Royston Library changeover will take place on Monday 7 November from 3.15 to 4.00pm and our Tuesday afternoon practical sessions in the coming month will be on 1 and 15 November from 2.00 to 4.00pm in the Market Hill Rooms.

 

Autumn exhibitions update 2022

Following our successful Autumn Exhibition in Royston Town Hall, we are pleased to announce that our Online Autumn Exhibition will be opening on Saturday 1st October 2022. It will close on Thursday 1st December 2022.

It contains many of the pictures that were on display at the exhibition in Royston Town Hall plus some new pictures to replace those that have already sold.

The RAS Library Exhibition of members’ paintings will resume on Monday 3 October As we shall be starting again from scratch, so please make an extra effort to bring along some paintings and help to ensure a good display.  The handing-in session will be 3.15 to 4.00pm.  See Peter Morgan’s email of 28 September for more information.

Our Tuesday afternoon practical sessions in the coming month will be on 4 October and 18 October from 2.00 to 4.00pm in the Market Hill Rooms.

The next Demonstration evening, following our summer break, will be on Friday 14 October in the Market Hill Rooms, starting at 8.00pm.  This time the artist will be Ophelia Redpath, whose subject will be “Surreal Painting in Oils”.  Ophelia, who lives near Cambridge, was Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year 2021 and has won international acclaim for her work, which attracts descriptions such as “magic realism” and “enchantment”.  There’s much more information about Ophelia on her website.

Autumn Exhibitions 2022

The Royston Arts Society Autumn Exhibition will take place in Royston Town Hall on the weekend of 23rd to 25th September 2022 and will form a major part of Royston Arts Festival. Entry is FREE and there will be over 300 paintings on display from 60 local artists.

Autumn Exhibitions

The Royston Arts Society Autumn Exhibition will take place in Royston Town Hall on the weekend of 23rd to 25th September 2022 and will form a major part of Royston Arts Festival. This will be a streamlined exhibition that will concentrate on the display and sale of paintings and cards without refreshments, catalogues or raffle tickets. You can preview some of the paintings that will be on display by clicking on the poster to the right (or below for mobiles). If you like what you see please come along to see the paintings for real.

We will also be running an optional online exhibition, starting on 1st October and running through to 1st December 2022. Artists can enter some or all of their paintings (but not cards) into this online exhibition but we will not accept entries solely for the online exhibition.

Helpers

These new arrangements will reduce the number of people we will need to staff the exhibition when it is open to the public. We will however need the same number of volunteers to set up the exhibition and take it down again at the end. Members of Royston Arts Society

RAS members can enter up to four framed and four unframed paintings plus a set of up to 25 greetings cards with no hanging fee and a commission of 15% on all sold work for both the Town Hall and online exhibition. If you sell a painting, you will be able to submit a replacement for the online exhibition. Entry form for RAS Members

Non-members

Non-member artists can enter up to three framed and three unframed paintings plus a set of up to 25 greetings cards. A hanging fee will be charged plus a commission of 20% on all sold work. If you sell a painting, you will be able to submit a replacement for the online exhibition. Entry form for Non-Members

The deadline for entry is 31st August 2022

The entry forms give more details of the entry criteria and the terms and conditions some of which have changed from previous years. You will need to:

  • check-in your paintings between 5.30 and 7.30 pm on Thursday 22nd September
  • pick up the unsold work between 5.30 and 6.15 pm on Sunday 25th

If you return your form before 23rd July and enter at least some of your pictures into the online exhibition then these paintings will be considered for inclusion on the exhibition poster.

Summer update

The next demonstration will be on Friday 8th July from 8.00pm to 10.00pm in Market Hill Rooms, when the artist will be Laura Boswell a landscape printmaker working exclusively with linocut and traditional Japanese woodblock. She trained in Japan, studying woodblock printmaking with master craftsmen, and her work is inspired by Japanese style and design. She has a degree in Art History/Visual Art from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and is an elected member to the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers.

Our next Tuesday afternoon practical sessions and the last before our summer break in August will be on  5th & 19th July from 2.00pm to 4.00pm in Market Hill Rooms.

 

June update

The next demonstration will be on Friday 10 June from 8.00pm to 10.00pm in Market Hill Rooms, when the artist will be Sue Williams who has taught watercolour painting for over 30 years and has a BA Hons degree from St Martins School of Art. She demonstrates using acrylic inks, watercolour, pen and ink or oils, usually painting two or three pictures with a commentary.  She has exhibited extensively,  written for The Artist and Paint magazines and won numerous awards for her work, including Overall Winner at the SAA Artist of the Year Competition in 2013. Our next Tuesday afternoon practical sessions will be on  7th & 21st June from 2.00pm to 4.00pm in Market Hill Rooms.

Upcoming events in April & May

The 2022 RAS Online Members Exhibition is launched today Saturday 16 April (continuing until Saturday 18 June).  The exhibition poster can be found on the right and you can just click on it to take take you to the Exhibition.

Our next Tuesday afternoon practical sessions will be on 19 April from 2.00pm to 4.00pm in Market Hill Rooms and then on the 3 and 17 May .

For the time being we are still strongly recommending mask-wearing and social distancing at our events.

The next demonstration will be on Friday 13 May from 8.00pm to 10.00pm in Market Hill Rooms, when our new projection system will be in operation.  The artist this month will be Maureen Mace, and her subject will be “Night skies and miniature brushes”  also advertised in our demo list as “Dreamlike vistas in oil and acrylics”.

Maureen  paints detailed, dream-like images in oils and acrylics, on canvas which incorporate rich night skies and a shining moon. Stories inspired by the detail and pattern of medieval art, tapestries and her imagination. Her work is very influenced by the wonderful city of Cambridge where she lives. Activities in March

The next demonstration will be on Friday 11 March from 8.00pm to 10.00pm in Market Hill Rooms.  The artist will be the Bedfordshire-based artist Jane Rhodes, who will be painting a “Street Scene in Pastels”.   You can find more information about Jane, with some examples of her work HERE.  See below for guidance on Covid restrictions at the meeting as recently advised by our Secretary Peter Morgan in an email to RAS Members which also contained the following details of our March events.

Although the Government has now relaxed the rules regarding Covid-related restrictions, for the time being we are still strongly recommending mask-wearing and social distancing at our events.

The above guidance also applies to our next Tuesday afternoon practical sessions which will be on 1 and 15 March from 2.00pm to 4.00pm in Market Hill Rooms.

The next Royston Library changeover will take place from 3.15 to 4.00pm on Monday 7 March. Please wear a face-mask while in the Library and see Peter’s email for more important information.

Also, don’t forget that membership subscriptions for the year beginning on 1 April 2022 are now due.  If  haven’t already done so you will need to pay the renewal fee of £18 by 31 March to avoid incurring a £2 joining fee (and also to ensure that you are eligible to enter paintings in the 2022 Members’ Online Exhibition).  Details on how to pay were in the email sent out at the end of January by our Membership Secretary, Hazel Haywood – email membership@roystonarts.org.uk

February Demonstration etc …

The next demonstration will be on Friday 11 February from 8.00pm to 10.00pm in Market Hill Rooms.  The artist will be Paul Alcock, and his subject will be a “Still Life in Oils”.  He lives in Essex and is a former semi-finalist (2018) in the “Sky Landscape Artist of the Year” competition.  There’s more information about Paul, with examples of his work, on his website.  See below for guidance on Covid restrictions at the meeting as recently advised by our Secretary Peter Morgan in an email to RAS Members which also contained the following details of our February events.

Earlier in January Members should have received Richard Clayton’s email “The way forward post-Covid” and his invitation to respond to a questionnaire.  The questionnaire remains open and there is no deadline for responses, so if you haven’t already responded please consider doing so.  It’s a valuable opportunity to tell us what you think of our current activities and what we should be doing in future, and will help the Committee with its forward planning.  Here’s the link: Royston Arts Society Members Questionnaire

Members should also have received two important emails, with invitations to renew your RAS membership for 2022-23 (deadline for renewals 31 March), and to enter the 2022 Members’ Online Exhibition (deadline for entries 31 March).  Eligibility for the latter will of course depend on having renewed your RAS membership!

AGM etc….

Our Annual General Meeting will be held via Zoom on Friday 7th January at 8pm. All members should have received paperwork and joining details by now but if not please contact our Secretary, Peter Morgan, email: secretary@roystonarts.org.uk.

Our next event will be on 14th January when Keith Hornblower FSAI, an internationally-renowned watercolourist will be making a welcome return to RAS. His subject will be a “Snow Scene in Watercolour” (though those who have seen previous demo’s will know that he works quickly and is quite likely to produce a second painting as well). The next exhibition that RAS will be hosting will be the Members Exhibition starting on 16th April 2022 and running through to 18th June 2022 and entry details will be posted on this website and our Facebook page in the new year.
